ELEGIA N. 5
DIE NÄCHTLICHEN. WALZER

The same basic considerations apply to the fifth Elegy, preceded by No. 7 from the Turandot Suite and by an Intermezzo from the opera. What began fortissimo in the Suite and was marked, 'Düster, kraftvoll und bewegt, becomes in the Elegy, "Rapido, fuggevole e velato," marked down to a piano. The opera simply asks for "Molto tranquillo (alla breve)", and drops the dynamic even further down to a pianissimo. Similar to the previous Elegy, the original music is used purely as a beginning, at times as a rough sketch. Even when the original music is harmonically unchanged, the regular waltz beat is transformed into fast and fleeting criplet figures, but much of the original is greatly changed by means already described. A levelling out of tempo occurs over the three versions. In the Suite, the middle section is marked "molto più tranquillo"; in the Elegy, 'Un poco piü tranquillo"; in the opera the tempo remains the same throughout. [Sitsky, 63-64]
