of Richard Wagner, tells of her early life at the heart of Germany's musical
world. The young Adolf Hitler was a visitor to the Wagner home and Friedeli.

with the way Germany was evolving, she began to leave on extended visits
to France, England and Switzerland until, at the outbreak of World War II,
Hitler demanded she return. . "The narrative abounds in delightful behind-the-scenes

ageing widow, Cosima, and her daughers; of Siegfried and Winifred Wagner

of Hitler through the eyes of a child of whom he was fond, is a unique one.
There is the delectable story of the banquet Hitler threw to i. mpress the
British, and its effect on Anthony Eden, and of the unheard-of achievement
of Sir Thomas Beecham in out-talking Hitler. Down to the last dramatic scene
in which Winifred Wagner, acting as Hitler's emissary, tells her daughter
what fate i. s in store for her if she refuses to conform, the book is dramatic
and entertaining and gives a picture of German life and culture which is
