Wagner, Friedelind. With Page Cooper:  THE ROYAL FAMILY OF BAYREUTH

Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, (1948), Ist edition.. 203 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. The author, granddaughter of Richard Wagner, tells of her early life at the heart of Germany's musical world. The young Adolf Hitler was a visitor to the Wagner home and Friedeli. nd was often a guest of his after he came into power. Feeling ill at ease with the way Germany was evolving, she began to leave on extended visits to France, England and Switzerland until, at the outbreak of World War II, Hitler demanded she return. . "The narrative abounds in delightful behind-the-scenes anecdotes concerning the great and near-great. We get glimpses of Wagner's ageing widow, Cosima, and her daughers; of Siegfried and Winifred Wagner (an English-born Hitler supporter); of Tos. canini, Furtwangler, Richard Strauss; of von Ribbentrop, Goring, Goebbels; and many others. Its presentation of Hitler through the eyes of a child of whom he was fond, is a unique one. There is the delectable story of the banquet Hitler threw to i. mpress the British, and its effect on Anthony Eden, and of the unheard-of achievement of Sir Thomas Beecham in out-talking Hitler. Down to the last dramatic scene in which Winifred Wagner, acting as Hitler's emissary, tells her daughter what fate i. s in store for her if she refuses to conform, the book is dramatic and entertaining and gives a picture of German life and culture which is of real historical value." Light edge wear to boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered. light foxing on top/bottom of textblock, very light browning on endpapers - a few tiny foxing marks at top of front endpapers. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, foxing on inside of spine - a few specks on outside, crease on front flap, li. ght to moderate soiling. VG/G+. Wagner, Bayreuth, World War II, Adolf Hitler, Weimar Republic, Cosima, Toscanini, Furtwangler, Richard Strauss, von Ribbentrop, Goring, Goebbels, Winifred, Personal reminiscences, Music, Musicians, Politics..
