ANOTHER BOY PIANIST THE YOUNG PIANIST IS WARMLY GREETED BY A NEW-YORK AUDIENCE OTTO HEGNER'S PLAYING *** Otto Hegner, the child pianist, has had to undergo a medical examination in America, owing to the interference of a Children's Protection Society. The certificate obtained from the doctor who attended him was as follows: "The grand result of a thorough examination of the boy pianist, Otto Hegner, is that he is now in perfect health. The playing of a difficult piece of music in my presence, the time occupied being twelve minutes, produced no fatigue and had no effect on the body temperature. The boy is abundantly able to do the work involved in his contract without impairing his health, either immediate or remote." (The Argus, Saturday, January 18, 1890) *** OTTO VS. JOSEF Young Otto Hegner opens his career as a musical prodigy in this country by incidentally remarking that he thinks he could "lick" JOSEF HOFMANN. A "scrap" between these youthful geniuseswould be of world-wide interest. Hegner thinks he could strike three or four octaves out of Hofmann, but realizes that the latter is expert in counter-point. If Hegner could get in a nocturne on Hofmann and the latter did not answer by a sonata in B flat or a symphony in the left ear the fight would be a long and hard one. It is to be hoped that a meeting can be arranged. - N. Y. World. (MUSIC TRADE REVIEW) Mr. Steinway also saw young Otto Hegner. Rubinstein holds a very high opinion both of Hegner and Josef Hoffman, and believes these youthful pianists have a brilliant future ahead, if not spoiled by indiscreet flattery and want of direction and control. As a welcome relief to Chopin's Nocturne in D flat, played by Baby Hegner at St. James's Hall, we shall step across to Bond Street and behold "Le Petit Américain" dashing off his "Nocturne" on canvas. I sometimes wonder if I might have been made such an infant art prodigy, but when I was a lad public taste was not in its second childhood in matters of art patronage, nor was the forcing of children practised in the same manner as it is nowadays. (THE CONFESSIONS OF A CARICATURIST) *** Décidément, il n'y a plus d'enfants!
