In
very good condition, with wide margins, deckle edges left and right. A
fine impression, with a subtle layering of plate tone; the detailing
exquisite. Orlik (1870-1932) was a member of the Berlin and the
Viennese Secessions, but although sometimes identified as a leading and
early German Expressionist, his art transcended any single movement.
Influenced by the art of Japan, and having studied and worked there and
elsewhere in the Orient, he brought the sensibility gained there to
works such as Japanerin in Winterkleid and his later work. In the end,
although he was an important modernist, he may be remembered more for
his splendid draughtsmanship than any specific aesthetic influence.
Orlik traveled to Japan in 1900, and when he returned he made a
series of etchings reflecting his Japanese travels; many of these were
exhibited in the modernist art exhibits that took place in Berlin and
Vienna.
