ELEGIA N. 3
MEINE SEELE BANGT UND HOFFT
ZU DIR. CHORALVORSPIEL

The third Elegy corresponds very closely with the first 10 pages of the 1910 version of the Fantasia Contrappuntistica. Significant alterations are only made in the very beginning and in the "ansioso" section, where the Elegy is only able to suggest what Busoni finally achieves in the Fantasia by a very clever redistribution of hands, allowing a rhythmic variant of the chorale melody to be added to the already agitated texture. But the bitonal section near the opening (A major chorale against an E flat pedal), stressing the interval of the tritone, is a genuine aural discovery and remains unchanged in the later editions of the Fantasia (See Fantasia Contrappuntistica).
